We Love… 2011 brought a diverse and awe-inspiring run of musical feasts, not least their closing fiesta where Aphex Twin, Fatboy Slim, Joris Voorn, James Zabiela and Rob Da Bank plus many other afficionados performed to another jam packed Sunday night of action at Space. We get the low down from those there to bear witness to another victorious summer.
“We Love…, Space is one of the very few projects that always gave me full freedom, to express my personality in many ways. Music was always first, beyond the name "We Love". In Ibiza, it really means something, believe me. " Miss Kittin
The seminal Planet E set things off back in June as they celebrated 20 years of the label with Carl Craig, Derrick May and Paul Woolford. James Zabiela marked his era defining 10 years of residency at We Love… this summer and invited young and raw new talent to join the celebration with Apparat, Pearson Sound, Spektre and more in tow. Mr Doris and Friends new After Dark Sessions debuted on the Sunset Terrace to a glorious reception, showcasing the cream of the leftfield beats and world music scenes.
“Another great summer in Space. With Red Light in full effect the show was magic, and we felt the love." Tom Findlay, Groove Armada
Those lucky enough to visit the incredible multi-layered island of Ibiza this season will have born witness to many magical moments created by the We Love team, still reeling out after over a decade at the top. Innervisions closed the terrace with Amy Winehouse’s ‘Back To Black’ the day after the young singer passed away and mulletover’s Geddes closed the discoteca with a momentous sing a long to Talking Heads in August.
"Personal favorite moments this summer have been the live shows we did with Caribou, Octave One, Innervisions and 2020 Soundsystem. It's always worth the trouble of putting on live electronic dance music based bands to see how it’s all actually put together. If like me, you have been a long term fan of the acts, it's not an easy thing to do in a nightclub and I think we really pulled it off this year with these acts.” Mark Broadbent, We Love… programmer.
"Joris Voorn's residency made it for me this summer, he was nothing but amazing every time. Also, Claude VonStroke's added after party value kept us all in high spirits on Mondays." Sarah Broadbent, programmer
Classic favourites 2manyDJs, Tensnake and Groove Armada met new faces such as the We Love… newest residents Mat Playford and jozif, already island favourites. The intimate Red Room championed underground sounds as Ryan O’Gorman’s Burlington Project highlighted the likes of The Revenge, Steffi, Clive Henry and A Guy Called Gerald. Providing a respite from the hustle of the main rooms, the laidback El Salon was steered by the charismatic Chris Bones, and pitched down with a mixture of re-edits and psychedelic disco reigning supreme.
“Superpitcher on the terrace, Lindstrom, our very own Ryan O'Gorman warming up the terrace for me is the best I have witnessed for years and jozif & PBR Streetgang doing a similar sterling job. My all time favourite Miss Kittin and two other female DJ's, Smokin Jo and Lottie both nailed the terrace. I have to mention our closing party, and specifically Fatboy Slim, thank you so much Norman, you were killer! As were all of our guest and resident DJ's, we had an amazing summer.” Darren Hughes, We Love… programmer.
One aspect that continues to make Space Ibiza’s best loved venue is their attention to detail and immaculate production and 2011 only saw them up their game, bringing world class shows to over 5000 revellers week in week out. As Space’s flagship party, We Love… provides something for every walk of life and every year it aims higher and fires with more precision. As We Love… stretches its wings for the winter taking the brand across the globe, the team recollect and give appreciation to those that made another summer one to remember.
“We Love… this year has been the perfect musical storm of cutting edge guests, stalwart residents and fresh faced first timers. One thing proven this summer is our audience's balance of a respectful attitude to innovation and an ever discerning ear for timeless quality – if one act can sum that up it would undoubtedly be Simian Mobile Disco. An accompanying highlight was bringing the sound of balearic-bass to Space by way of Big L & Roo Dog." Ruairi Dunne, We Love… (“machinist / pundit / archivist”)
"The music this summer has been fantastic. DJ Hell in the Discoteca was proper acid house and the Groove Armada shows have been next level. DJing with my mate Roo Dog was a summer highlight and cemented our position as ladies' favourites!" Andy Livesey AKA Big L, We Love… (“taking care of business behind the scenes and in front of the decks”)
