Bristol In:Motion The Bristol Sound
In:Motion’s opening weekend was nothing short of spectacular with each room filled from wall to wall with musical minds and fans alike. On both Friday and Saturday’s sell out shows, Motion’s cavernous confines, bore witness to an explosion of the electronic music scene’s best talent as the likes of Fake Blood, L-Vis 1990, Jamie Jones, Heidi and the wondrous Hospitality crew took to the stage.
“We Kicked off In:motion´s tunnel in true jackathon style. hot, sweaty and drippin with serious jams! Jamie Jones and Waifs& Strays gave me a work out playing the best music around at the moment. The crowd gave us the impression that they wanted it dirty so that’s what we gave them. And the brie cheeseburger on the way out was the cherry on top!” Heidi, Jackathon.
As we now look ahead to the rest of the season having only just dipped our toes into the water, its time to delve into Bristol’s box of tricks to see what's in store.
“Bristol stands alone (pop. only 400,000). It continues regardless of capital fashion. It’s got it’s own tunes, scenes, gangs and parties, and it doesn’t care whether you come or not.” The Ransom Note.
For years, a vast catalogue of music of all shapes and genres has been slinking out of this comparatively small capital of the South-West, much of it going on to have global influence. The true home of drum and bass, it’s now a thriving hub and melting pot for the many strands of the emerging bass scene - currently the most exciting in dance music today.
As a slew of fresh and talented artists continue to bubble up from the beating heart of Bristol - Julio Bashmore, Redlight, Eats Everything, Baobinga, Waifs & Strays, Bowski just in the last year alone - the city continues to draw attention and attract producers and DJs from far further afield. With just over a week away from the launch of this year’s incredible In:Motion 2011 series, we take a look at why everyone wants a piece of the sounds and skills that are evolving in the West Country’s musical motherland and who’ll be representing across the season’s programme.
Young Julio Bashmore could be considered to be the new musical mayer of the city. Despite Bristol being a hotbed of bass beats, Julio’s first love is house music. Operating just on the peripheries of the city´s scene, he’s quietly cultivated a take on the genre unlike any other. Another Bristol-based artist who is skillfully navigating the unnamed airspace between house, breakbeats, dubstep and much inbetween is Redlight. Having already crafted a handful of jet-propelled sound fusions which have won over early fans and followers including Skream, Toddla T, Jack Beats, Goldie, Carl Cox, Pete Tong and Annie Mac Redlight now looks set to become another.
Set to become yet another pioneering force bursting out of the West Country, Eats Everything has a solid reputation for his unforgettable trademark sets, combining the latest and greatest sounds in his own unique cutting-edge style. Waifs & Strays have been setting things alight with Jamie Jones including their track ‘Body Shiver’ on his Fabric 59 mix this year and one of the key faces of dance music Heidi claimed their ´Yeah Yeah´ was "the dirtiest house track she has heard in a very long time."
Beat Peddling prodigal Bowski lively productions are finding new fans every day, uniting heads on all fronts with their affable, accessible charm, while his confident and well-paced DJ sets are further cementing his reputation as a star of the future. Baobinga has proved himself through his perfectly crafted switched-on sets that showcase exactly where the UK’s various beats and bass scenes should be headed.
With it’s beginnings as a club night eight years ago in Bristol Futureboogie now houses club promotions in both Bristol and London, a worldwide respected website, a management and booking agency, and radio shows on FM and online in UK, Japan, Turkey, Italy, and Austria. Bristol’s own institution and musical guiding torch Futureboogie check in at the end of November.
Based in Brisol and one of the most popular dnb nights in the UK, Run is an In:Motion family favourite. Originally a weekly night at Bristol’s own Native, they’ve gone from strength to strength. With a slew of incredible events proceeding these legendary beginning - they bring a very Bristol vibe in their sound and approach to Motion.
Just Jack are an award winning Bristol based club night that play serious music in a not so serious manner. Though they are the youngsters of the pack their name and notoriety is spreading across seas and borders having recently hosted their own boat party at Hideout festival in Croatia.
So it seems Bristol’s talking and everyone’s stopping to listen. Get ready because the musical education starts here.
