For the second release, the burgeoning Apollonia offer a sensational collaboration from label heads Dan Ghenacia and Shonky. ‘Close To The Edge’ is an elevating dose of house magic with distinctive groove and that perfect summer feel. First class DJ and producer The Mole steps in for remix duty taking the original into his deep and trippy world.
Dan Ghenacia holds a wealth of experience and knowledge when it comes to running a successful record label and producing quality music. Having run the widely adored Freak N Chic for the seven years it existed and releasing on labels including Crosstown Rebels, Real Tone, Adult Only and Supernature, the move to start new record label Apollonia alongside good friends Dyed Soundorom and Shonky is the perfect next step. Fresh from the first release on the label, Shonky joins Dan in their first collaborative effort with stunning results. Clearly a man who knows his way around the studio, Shonky has released on labels including Contexterrior, Culprit, Spectral Sound, Real Tone and Freak N Chic - an early mark of Dan and Shonky’s relationship. The two clearly share the same musical vision yet have their own defining styles, which shines through in this release and is the perfect beginning for what is yet to come from this blossoming dream team.
Making up the A-side, ‘Close To The Edge’ gets to work with a powerful punching bass and raw kick riding under a wave of sensual hypnotic overlay, with the alluring, warm vocal soon creeping in for maximum effect. Dropping the funky rolling bass line to carry the groove, the vintage strings and shimmering synths stream in for a soulful summer feel.
Over on the B-side, Canadian artist Colin de la Plante aka The Mole steps in to spin his dark, trippy and wonderful twist on the original. A deep progression of intricate layers of percussion and eerie off-kilter keys, he adds a whomping sub bass to lead the deeper groove with an effective play of the vocal to create the perfect late night druggy vibe.
