Currently Rough Trade Album of the week, Creative Use unleash a limited CD only collection of the best bits so far from the pioneering label.
Featuring long deleted and still highly sought after gems from this cult catalogue available for the first time on CD, with a couple of exclusive and killer new cuts thrown in, Creative Use illustrates why it was one of the most pioneering house music labels in existence.
Started back in 2003, Kelvin Andrews and Danny Spencer’s Creative Use helped spearhead a resurgent re-edit movement, Kelvin himself, brother Danny Spencer (Soul Mekanik), Mark Seven & Mark E have all contributed sterling reworks for the label, breathing new life into not only disco & lost Balearic classics, but soul, electronic funk and acidic gospel cuts alike. A master craftsman behind the decks, Kelvin´s dancefloor nouse informs the gourmet selections to enjoy in all their glory again.
The innovative Soul Mekanik are true reinventors of house music. They have touched on many corners of the genre in over 20 years in the game. In 2010, Kelvin Andrews and Danny Spencer AKA Soul Mekanik returned from a hiatus with a look back and a ´future refection´ (in apurely time traveling sense) with their Wonk and RIP labels andgarnered the well-coveted Essential New Tune spot and a residency at Ibiza’s beloved Pacha nightspot. Now it’s the turn of Creative Use as the label reinstates itself with old faces and introduces its arsenal of musical bullets to a sea of fresh ears. A true one of a kind and a benchmark for quality its place as the house music cult imprint has been reconfirmed and cemented.
“Creative Use sprang to life in 2003 as a way of showcasing some of our own DJ versions of classic and unknown tracks from ourrecord collection. At the time, it really was an indulgent move, inspired by those early reel to reel edits played by Ron Hardy at The Muzic Box in Chicago & Daniele Baldelli´s Cosmic mixtapes. The plan was to create the ultimate DJ versions of these tracks, do super-limited vinyl runs coupled with art sleeves and sometimes hand numbered screen prints to give them extra collectibility. Creative Use ´The Collection´ is a compilation of some of the highlights plus some exclusive tracks. There´s more to come, but here´s the story so far.” Kelvin Andrews (Soul Mekanik)
