Rippling with slow-paced funk and with starry-eyed soul, Double Hill returns to Gadi Mizrahi’s vinyl only imprint Double Standard this time with fellow Israeli and co-producer Jerome C for the stellar ‘I Need Love EP’.
Title track ‘I Need Love’ sets the pace with a sensual swing and super funky feeling of the guitar laced with threads of soulful hip hop, cosmic sparks and the passionate, yearning vocal that recurs throughout. Keeping up the laidback tempo, ‘Blue Sky Holiday’ perfectly captures the sublime feeling of escape with the distinctive female vocals sweeping across warm pads to the gentle flow of beats, wood blocks and solid claps.
‘A Little More’ is a lesson in restrained cosmic funk, reminiscent of a forgotten vintage classic. The chugging groove is punctuated by the rhythm of a resonating voice and the whole mood oozes sex appeal. Closing the EP and picking up the pace a little, ‘This Pain’ is a deep house gem that rolls over warm sonic waves and melodic bassline beats. Electronic pools of water merge with dubby atmospherics and the latent rise of soaring string pads builds emotive intensity as the simple message “love is the answer” is carried through penetrating, soulful tones.
Hailing from Israel, Double Hill creates music with a sumptuous mixture of house, disco, funk, and hip-hop. The suburb he lives in now, ‘Givatayim’ in Hebrew meaning ‘two hills’ in English is where he started to make music at the age of 16 and the inspiration behind the name. Taking an individual approach, music production quickly became an obsession and the staple part of his life. After 3 years of travelling in Asia, he returned to Israel and decided to go deeper into the spiritual life and moved to a Hasidic yeshiva in the north of Israel, once again dedicating his free time to making music. At the end of 2009, he moved back to the small suburb near Tel Aviv and further developed his musical side and studio full of old vintage machines. This is his second release for Double Standard after the blissful ‘Purple Hills EP’ out earlier this year.
Jerome C was born and raised at Haifa City Port in Israel. His music love affair began at the early age of 13, when he received an electric guitar for his bar mitzvah. That’s all it took for him to kick-start his music career as he started playing in different bands, spending most of his time in recording studios. In 2003, Jerome moved to London and began DJing and producing electronic music. Also a fan of vintage gear, Jerome is always looking to achieve his own version of that special analog sound. Moving back to Tel Aviv in 2009, Jerome became a well- known producer in the rock industry but making electronic music remains a deep passion.
