The master of reinvention, the humble godfather and a true leader of our time, this quintessential gentlemen cares so little about following he is light years ahead of the pack. Now he digs deep to share his influences from across the ages for the special Masterpiece series, spanning three discs of inspirational treasures.
Following the likes of Gilles Peterson and Francois K, Masterpiece brings you legends from the world of music. Who else could join the dots between styles so vast a resume as acid house, rockabilly, electronica, techno, post punk, deep house and countless unclassifiable rare cuts than the man who has been collecting records for over three decades with no regard for their origin or trends.
A campaign started by his army of fans to crown him the new John Peel and award him his own BBC Radio show had the media in a spin to support it. That’s because Weatherall is a maverick, never a people pleaser he has made many an unpopular choice during his thirty plus year career, but he stands by them and for that he has been crowned the ultimate music selector and king of the dancefloor.
His colourful past is an entangled mess of flirtations with the underground and the elite. Early involvement at London’s first acid house club Shoom, remixing rock stars such as Bjork, Friendly Fires, My Bloody Valentine, Happy Mondays, and not to forget the illustrious production of Primal Scream’s landmark early 90s album ‘Screamadelica’ has been offset with regular experimental triumphs as Two Lone Swordsman, Sabres of Paradise and others as Weatherall humbly shies away from the limelight and is beckoned into the sub-terrain to develop the dark sounds he has become known and respected for.
Predictably it’s impossible to classify the material Weatherall has picked for Masterpiece. From The Horrors to Kasper Bjorke, Tornado Wallace to Cut Copy, and Todd Terje to Toddla T, each disc showcases his unique ability to veer between styles and never quite be noticed. Heavily peppered with his own edits and remixes, it’s an honest representation of his imaginative and unpredictable take on a sound that spans generations.
Opening aptly with ‘A Love From Outer Space’, an ode to the heart of this project, the name is also the title of his eclectic all night party alongside Sean Johnston that started in 2010 and became a cult night now found at festivals and clubs worldwide. The aim was to slow things down and never knowingly exceed 122bpm, working through spaced out treats, proto-house, industrial, rare dubs and and slo-mo beats.
The result is seductive and addictive, a must-have for train-spotters and a door opener for the newly converted. But most of all finally marks down the vision of one of the greatest musical innovators of our time.
